"OUR ILLUSION WEAVE ROSES AROUND US, AND WHEN WE TRY TO ESCAPE, WE ARE MET WITH THORNS"

A sumptuous, gothic-infused story about a marriage that is unraveled by dark secrets, a friendship cursed to end in tragedy, and the danger of believing in fairy tales—the breathtaking adult debut from New York Times bestselling author Roshani Chokshi.
Once upon a time, a man who believed in fairy tales married a beautiful, mysterious woman named Indigo Maxwell-Casteñada. He was a scholar of myths. She was heiress to a fortune. They exchanged gifts and stories and believed they would live happily ever after—and in exchange for her love, Indigo extracted a promise: that her bridegroom would never pry into her past.
But when Indigo learns that her estranged aunt is dying and the couple is forced to return to her childhood home, the House of Dreams, the bridegroom will soon find himself unable to resist. For within the crumbling manor’s extravagant rooms and musty halls, there lurks the shadow of another girl: Azure, Indigo’s dearest childhood friend who suddenly disappeared. As the house slowly reveals his wife’s secrets, the bridegroom will be forced to choose between reality and fantasy, even if doing so threatens to destroy their marriage . . . or their lives.
Combining the lush, haunting atmosphere of Mexican Gothic with the dreamy enchantment of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, The Last Tale of the Flower Bride is a spellbinding and darkly romantic page-turner about love and lies, secrets and betrayal, and the stories we tell ourselves to survive.

I honestly have never been more confused in my entire life and that’s saying something. That’s also probably a lie but we’re going to ignore that. This review is so long overdue (quite literally - I read this book in FEBURARY while in Taiwan during break for crying out loud but damn was I on a reading spree back then) but I did promise to eventually write a review and here it is! This book was equal parts beautiful and confusing and I’m going to attempt to make sense of my jumbled thoughts I recall while reading this book so grab some bubble tea and let’s dive right into it.

The story opens up introducing a happy couple. A beautiful marriage between a scholar of myths and a heiress to a fortune with a dark past. Indigo Maxwell-Casteñada is equal parts mystery as she is beautiful and the two lovers, despite their differences, find comfort in one another and exchange a bargain: he can have her heart with the promise of a happily ever after but in exchange for her love, he must never inquire into her past. But when Indigo learns of her estrangled aunt health deteriorating rapidly, the couple is forced to return to her childhood home, the House of Dreams. The bridegroom will find himself unable to resists the cries of the crumbling manor that whisper for secrets to be unveiled with the promise of answers. For within the walls, lurks the shadow of another girl who is long gone: Indigo’s childhood best friend Azure. As the manor slowly reveals Indigo’s secrets, the bridegroom becomes forced to choose and search between fantasy and reality even if that could yield in catastrophe.

I don’t even know where to start with this except to say that reading this book was so confusing and magical and I really don’t know what’s real anymore good lord. The magical aspect? Absolutely stunning. I was so emersed in the story and the sprinkles of magic throughout only made it all the more better even if it was an absolute headache to follow. I actually felt like I could just walk outside and enter this world of magic and mystery right this second which is definitely credited to the beautiful writing because what the actual heck Roshani Chokshi. The writing is just straight up mesmerizing and I am way too dumb to follow along but nevertheless it was so pretty and I was so confused but who cares. This book was just equal parts odd as it is pretty and I’m living for it.

The bond between the bridegroom and Indigo is one I was surprised to find that I was rooting for. At first it kind of felt to me that the love between the two was slight obsession which seemed to be fueled by intruige and curiosity. However, it’s hard to miss the mutal trust that emerged between the two and even while the bridegroom was prying in places he wasn’t supposed to, he still felt a sense of loyalty and love for Indigo which totally earned brownie points. Indigo herself is a mystery. To be fair we see more of her through the flashbacks of Azure’s chapters in the book but learning about her past and her character was one of the coolest things, contrasting that to the present and very cryptic Indigo.

I’m not sure how much I can say without giving too much way about the book but I will say that I did throw my kindle across the my cousin’s bed when I finished the book and proceeded to text my sister in a frenzy despite it being like 5 am in America because I wasn’t allowed to screech my feelings out loud. This book was absolutely amazing and literally everything about it was just beautiful. I was way too invested in a book thats not even 300 pages which is also huge props to Roshani Chokshi because she mangaged to absoloutely blow my mind with a book that’s half the size of most YA novels. Anyways that’s a wrap! I’m actually surprised I managed to write this much about a book I read nearly 7 months ago but I present my very late and hopefully comprehendable reveiw about one of the most beautiful books I read in 2023. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m on my way to make my very own key to the Otherworld.

FINAL RATING:
What's the prettiest book you've read so far?

I know I’ve been dead for like 3 months (probably 4 by the time I post this oops) but I wanted to write this post in dedication to someone. I’m sure you’ve all heard by now but it was reported on April 19th that ASTRO’s Moonbin has passed away. It’s only been a little bit since Rocky decided to leave the company and group but now AROHA’s are dealing with another loss so soon. ASTRO was one of the first groups I got into when I started listening to k-pop and I’ve never been happier to join a fandom. I’m writing this post as a sort of tribute to them and so many of the wonderful memories I’ve made over the last 3 years that I’ve known them. Basically that’s a fancy way of saying I’m pairing up my top 5 Astro songs with a book/book character that I think fits the overall vibe of the song so without further ado, grab some bubble tea and let’s get started.

julie from you've reached sam by dustin thao
+
our spring (astro's second full album: all yours)

"Our Spring" has got to be my favorite ASTRO song of all time which is quite surprising considering it changed around a lot with each new song I was discovering from their earlier years. But when this song came out as a b-side from their third album All Yours, it automatically stole the top spot. With it’s comforting but catchy instrumental and lyrics, the song reminicents about a person they’ve once loved and I promise you that my soul acended when I heard this song because of course it did, Rocky wrote it. Jokes aside, I do think Julie matches quite well with the song considering the song reminicents about another person but also acknowledges the loss and parts once more. Julie’s grief and struggle through the course of the novel are insanely relatable but her character growth in the end is what makes the whole middle part of the book more worth it.

leigh from the astonishing color of after by emily x.r. pan
+
gemini (astro's second full album: all yours)

This song. Makes me want to cry. Like genuinely curl up into a burrito and just bawl my eyes out type of cry. When I first heard this song I was in so much awe that so much emotions can be conveyed in a singular song and in a language I didn’t even speak. The vocals are seriously no joke people, this song made me acend to heaven. On a more serious note, I think that this song pairs up quite well with Leigh from the equally beautiful novel The Astonishing Color of After by Emily X.R. Pan which by the way, left me absolutely speechless when I read it because reading it exploded my brain. The amount of emotions throughout the book resonate with the equally powerful and depressing emotions in the song match up together perfectly and now I actually will cry so we’re moving on.

rosalind lang from foul lady fortune by chloe gong
+
light in the sky (astro's third full album: drive to the starry road)

Can I go one review without mentioning Chloe Gong? Probably not because I haven’t read as much as a used to and I struggled with picking a book for the song and also choosing between 3 songs because they’re all just too mf good and I can’t pick just one. I’m not going to write that much for recapping this book because I’m pretty sure my last review was this book so just go read that to see me freaking out for the nth time about this book but its basically a sequel to the TVD and OVE duo and it has kick butt assasins and a classic fake marriage romance that will make you smile like an idiot. "Light in the sky" delivers an optimistic message about the power of love and the way it can change one's life which is basically Rosalind throughout the course of the book to Orion and I am an actual genius because I’m right. Basically go read the book and listen to the song because both are absolutely amazing and you should totally go do that right now.

azure from the last tale of the flowerbride by roshani chokshi
+
waterfall (astro's eight mini album: switch on)

Dude I love this song omg this brings back memories. When I heard the trailer for the song I was so excited and when the song came out I instantly fell in love with it despite the chorus being a little different than the trailer but still this song is beautiful and I’m pretty sure it was my ringtone for a good couple of months. ASTRO’s vocals are actually insane and the ability to convey so much emotion in a song is something that I absolutely adore them for and that will never change. When I looked at the English translation for the song, I started cackling because I have literally never been more proud of myself for placing a song and book together that fit so well. That being said, I think "Waterfall" goes really well with Azure from The Last Tale of the Flowerbride because the song just gives off emotional and dreamy vibes which, if you read the book you’d totally get why. If you haven’t, I highly recommend you check it out or wait for my review that I promise will eventually come out because I absolutely adored that book to not write a review about it. The writing in this book is the most confusing thing ever and I actually loved this it so much despite barely understanding anything so that should totally be a sign for you to read it because why not.

will solace from the sun and the star by rick riordan + mark oshiro
+
lights on (astro's seventh mini album: gateway)

Look at the title of the song and look at who I paired it with. You cannot tell me I’m not a genius because I totally am. I genuinely think that this song might have been made for Will to profess is undying love for Nico again because the lyrics quite literally say so. The song is about someone supporting their loved ones during the hardest times and being their light in times of darkness. You look me in the mf face and tell me that is not our sunshine to our adoreable little ball of darkness; I fully stand by this theory and I will fight you (possibly) if necessary. Jokes aside, I loved the portrayal of truama in this book and Nico’s journey in learning to embrace himself with Will holding his hand tightly and lighting every step of the way. They’re perfect together and I could not be prouder of them for communicating their troubles to each other and finding a way to adapt with an open mind. Their love is so pure I swear the entire PJO world makes me want to believe in love again because I’ve never seen so many healthy relationships in my entire life.

Aaand that’s a wrap! I absolutely procrastinated on this review since my notions shows I started this review a couple days after I heard the news but I just couldn’t bring myself to write it because I was still so sad. I kept listening to their songs on Spotify and singing along while trying not to cry again but I knew I had to finish this review eventually. I love this group and all these boys with all my heart so much it hurts. Their laughters, music, and beautiful friendship got me through so much during COVID when I could barely smile anymore. I will always love and support them, wherever they are and no matter how far into a future. Moonbin, I miss you so goddamn much that it’s taking me a tremendous amount of effort not to cry right now as I write this but I trust that you’re happy up there right? AROHA’s will always remember you as the brightest moon who’s smile lit up the world. I miss you and I love you. I always will. I’m so glad I got to meet you and the rest of the group when I did, even if it wasn’t for long. Thank you ASTRO, for coming into my life and ensuring that I’ll never regret being an AROHA.

Rest in peace Moonbin, we love you.

That’s all from me now, AROHA signing off <3

This book has confirmed that I will always read anything Chloe Gong writes because they’re all just too good. I loved the unique retelling of Romeo and Juliet’s story through These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends and I’m pretty sure I screeched like a pterodactyl when I found out that there would be a series expanding this incredible world she built. This book was said to be a retelling of Shakespeare's As You Like It and honestly I had no idea what that is but I still loved this book regardless. Chloe Gong's retellings are literally perfect and that's coming from a bubble tea obsessed potato who loved her Romeo and Juliet retelling despite thinking the play was kinda dumb (I was forced to watch a 40 something minute video in like 7th grade as a substitute for not actually reading the play due to COVID and I low key remember just playing it in the background and then doing something else cause I didn't want to watch it lol). That being said, grab some bubble tea and let’s chat about some undercover butt kicking assassins in the world of 1931, Shanghai, China.

The book opens up a few years after Our Violent Ends leaves off and starring none other than Rosalind Lang, Juliette’s cousin. Four years ago, she was brought back from the brink of death and for some unknown reason, can’t die. Now she’s a kick butt assassin for her country. Her code name? Fortune. (literally gorgeous by the way dksjfdlsfjlkdsjflds) But when a series of murders start to appear with the Japanese under suspicion, Rosalind has a new mission. Pose as the fake wife of another Nationalist spy, Orion Hong, and identify the culprits behind the terror plot while infiltrating a foreign society. The problem? Both Rosalind and Orion have secrets they don’t want the other to find out and this mission will uncover more horrifying things then they ever could’ve imagined. Cue the double and triple agents and a plot line that’ll blow your mind because Chloe Gong said so.

Even after reading all 500 pages of its spectacular glory, I still don't know who the goddamn antagonist is. Nationalist? Communist? Who the heck is who and does what? I have no clue. This book did a fantastic job exploding my pea sized brain though. I had so much fun reading about Orion and Rosalind’s mission together and following them as they unravel the mystery of the murders in their city—which by the way, was super interesting so kudos to that. Watching two polar opposites being forced to pose in a fake marriage with no strings attached (totally) was absolutely my cup of tea and I really should know better by now when reading romance books and watching romance k-dramas because damn do I feel single.

Speaking of which, the romance here was absolutely mf’ing adorable and I need more like right now. She finds him infuriating and he pushes all her buttons regardless. Literal chefs kiss. I loved Rosalind and Orion’s fake relationship because I am a sucker for those types of things and seriously they fit each other so well. Their feelings only grew the more time they spent with each other and the moment when they started to see the other in a different light had me beaming so hard my face hurt. Y’all keep your eyes peeled because Rosalind and Orion aren’t the to-be couple out there and I can confirm that I am so goddamn invested in every single one of them.

One of the best 500 something pages I’ve ever read people and I do not regret for even a second picking this book up. Chloe Gong gives us a chance to explore and reunite side characters from These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends and I couldn’t have picked a better cast.  I loved the reemergence of old characters and the introduction of new characters and watching them all grow and develop throughout the book made me want to ball up and cry. How dare you Miss Chloe. Nonetheless, this book was mf’ing amazing and it was worth reading all 500 something pages so go read it right now and cry about it with me in the comments!

I'M BACK WITH THIS VERY MUCH OVERDUE REVIEW AS PROMISED BECAUSE IT WAS MIDTERMS WEEK AND CHEMISTRY IS A PAIN IN THE ASS I'M SORRY!! Anyways, hi people, I'm alive yes thanks for asking. Y’all Rin Chupeco is a BEAST because this book was terrifying in all the right way possible. My sister picked this up before I did and like freaked out while reading so I got curious. And when I say freaked out, my sister was asking me to hold her hand and saying “Oh my god oh my god” over and over. Also she refused to go upstairs by herself and was very spooked. Needless to say, I was not that spooked but this book still have me the chills. I will now word vomit my pain and admiration for Rin Chupeco and this roller coaster of a book so grab some bubble tea and let’s chat with ghosts!

The story opens up with a film crew from the US here to film a ghost hunting documentary thingy on a deserted island in the Philippines that’s supposedly haunted with a curse. They meet Alon, a local teen who seems to have a special relationship with the island and warns the crew to stay away if they know what’s good for them. And in a very Hollywood fashion with entitled celebrities and white men, they ignore Alon’s warning. With Alon agreeing to be their tour guide, the crew begin to settle down but the island’s little horrors begin showing themselves one by one. Cue the scary shit.

I do not know what to think anymore man. I was so confused when reading this which obviously means that this book is amazing and you should go read this right now. First things off, the horror. I don’t really read horror books with like ghosts and stuff because then I become paranoid but this book was extremely creepy and I mean that in the best way possible. The crew members have their own ghosts and the island is dead set on exposing the living shit out of them with said ghosts! Specifically the ones who have commited a big no no. If this book taught me anything, it’s that people are greedy as heck and karma is real people. Y’all should’ve gotten off the island when you had to chance but nOo, you just had to stick around because of legends of a Dreamer god who’ll grant unimaginable powers in exchange eight sacrifices. Now doesn’t that sound like a lovely time.

So the horror is amazing and creepy af. What next? I’m glad you asked because the romance is FREAKING ADORABLE. I was literally reading this in my room and squealing the second said characters were introduced to each other. When you read as many romance novels as I have, you can spot a ship from a mile away; it’s an amazing skill to have. Seriously though, they’re adorable and I feel perpetually single. Also I was not satisfied with the amount of cuteness and I want more.

I don’t think words can express how much I adored reading this and this book without a doubt made it onto my all time favorites lists. I loved the world that Rin Chupeco created and I hope to see more of it in the future. This is definitely one of their more underrated books but I would highly recommend more people check it out. Don’t read this book at night if you spook easily though, because I don’t think you’ll be able to sleep. And seriously, I don’t think I can ever look at a tree the same way ever again.

ALSO HAPPY LUNAR NEW YEAR OF THE RABBIT TO THOSE WHO CELEBRATE IT!!!

We made itttt! The year’s almost over and I literally do not want it to end. I haven’t really posted much cause of school and me low key forgetting I have a blog (sorry jiejie) so I will attempt to write one last post of the year to fill the gap on my blog. As the last post of the year, I’m going to talk about my most enjoyed reads of 2022 and pair them up with songs that I think would fit well with the main characters or overall vibe of the book cause why not! I did manage to read 50 books which was less than I read last year but not bad, especially since I kept finding myself in reading slumps. I’m going to shut up now so grab some bubble tea and let’s chat about the books that emotionally scarred me!

ace of spades by faridah àbíké-íyímídé

when we were kids by twice

First up, Ace of Spades. Hello we meet again! I think this was the first book review I wrote in 2022 and this book still gives me the chills everytime I think about it. The story follows two Black kids in “a very prestigious and very white school” who suddenly find themselves the targets of a weird mysterious person called Aces who’s revealing their darkest secrets for the whole school to see. Now doesn’t that sound like a fun time. This book talks about a so many serious topics and really enhances them while still being an amazing thriller novel. I don’t have a specific character to pair up a song with but I think the song “When We Were Kids” by Twice matches pretty well with the overall vibes of the book. The song reminiscents about the past and how things were when they were kids. I think Chi and Devon would find some comfort in that song after all they’ve been through. Twice’s vocals and ability to convey emotions through their songs is no joke people.

eight by iu

Next up we have the first book of 2022 that made me cry: You’ve Reached Sam by Dustin Thao! It follows a girl who’s life is consumed by grief after her boyfriend passes away in a car accident. She becomes so desperate to hear his voice again so she calls him and to her surprise, dun dUn DUNN, he picks up. This book was absolutely heartbreaking and I loved the portrayal of grief in Julie, especially with how some people treat those who are grieving after some time. In short words, this book was depressing and makes me feel chronically single. And what better song to pair this depresso espresso book than with “eight” by IU! The song talks about precious memories and wanting to go back to the past to stay in them, something Julie would definitely relate to. A depressing song with a depressing book! How fitting. Now excuse me while I go get my blankets and embrace my depresso espresso self.

starfish by akemi dawn bowman
+
stronger by wjsn (sung by dawon and yeonjung)

Oh would you look at that! The next book is also depressing af and also scarred me! Shocker. Yes, I’m talking about Starfish by Akemi Dawn Bowman because don’t I just love a book that scars the living heck out of me. The novel follows Kiko and her journey to accepting herself for who she is whilst also gaining the confidence to speak her mind. This book quite literally paints inspiration in your head and smacks a whole butt ton of feels right in your face. “Stronger”, sung by WJSN’s Dawon and Yeonjung, comes with an encouraging message that you can overcome any challenges and difficulties in your life. And that I think, is exactly the message Kiko needed to hear. Her struggle in standing up to her verbally abusive mother was one of the main conflicts in the book and in the end, was the most satisfying character developments/growth I’ve read this year.

the sacrifice by rin chupeco
+
maison by dreamcatcher

The next book surprisngly didn’t make me cry but rather, it gave me the chills. Ladies and gents, make  way for The Sacrifice by Rin Chupeco! This book was creepy in all the best ways possible and I am never going near a tree again. Also ghosts are real. The story opens up with a film crew from the US here to flim a ghost hunting documentary thingy on a deserted island in the Philippines. They meet Alon, a local teen who seems to have a special relationship with the island and warns the crew to stay away if they know whats good for them. And in a very Hollywood fashion with entitled celebrities and white men, they ignore Alon’s warning. With Alon agreeing to be their tour guide, the crew begin to settle down but the island’s little horrors begin showing themselves one by one. Cue the scary shit. Wow would you look at that, there’s conveniently a song called “Maison” by Dreamcatcher! The lyrics are literally “save my home in the jungle” and “please someone fight for us”, if this isn’t fate then I don’t know what is. On the serious side, this book was really good and I do highly recommend it. Oh and stan Dreamcatcher.

foul lady fortune by chloe gong
+
sour grapes by le sserafim

And the final book to wrap up 2022 with a smile is none other than Foul Lady Fortune by Chloe Gong. I literally loved These Violent Delights and Our Violent Ends so much and this book did not dissapoint. The book picks off with Rosalind Lang, Juliette’s cousin, who’s now an kick butt assasin and due to some mysterious experiment that saved her life, can’t die. Cue the double and triple agents and a captivating story that exploded my tiny pea brain. I low key don’t know who the antagonist is anymore but who cares; I’m just here for Rosalind and Orion and the scarce adorable moments we get from the other couples in this book. I paired Rosalind up with the song “Sour Grapes” by Le Sserafim since the song is literally her towards Orion and I’m absolutely living for it. “Sour Grapes” is a song about wanting to avoid love in fear that it’s not as sweet as the person imagines it to be. Safe to say that this song is basically Rosalind in a nutshell but not for long! Now go read this work of art right now.

And that’s a wrap! This year has honestly been a roller coaster of a ride with many amazing, tear-inducing memories made and I hope that’ll continue into the following year. If anything, this is just another reminder that I’m oLd. Happy new year!! Let’s make this year more beautiful than the last.

What was your favorite book you read in 2022?

Hunter Yee has perfect aim with a bow and arrow, but all else in his life veers wrong. He’s sick of being haunted by his family’s past mistakes. The only things keeping him from running away are his little brother, a supernatural wind, and the bewitching girl at his new high school.

Luna Chang dreads the future. Graduation looms ahead, and her parents’ expectations are stifling. When she begins to break the rules, she finds her life upended by the strange new boy in her class, the arrival of unearthly fireflies, and an ominous crack spreading across the town of Fairbridge.

As Hunter and Luna navigate their families’ enmity and secrets, everything around them begins to fall apart. All they can depend on is their love… but time is running out, and fate will have its way.

publication date: April 12th, 2022 | source: owned
page count: 400 | genre: fantasy, young adult, romance, contemporary

This book is literally depressing and Emily X.R. Pan did not disappoint. Her sophomore novel was just as beautiful and devastating as The Astonishing Colors of After and I’m 99% sure I just died a little on the inside. Thank you 姐姐 (jiejie/older sister) for pre-ordering this book so that this bored potato could get her grubby little hands on it and be emo with you. And now I will shut up and actually start this review so I can word vomit some of my pain onto this post.

An Arrow to the Moon is a Romeo and Juliet retelling with the Chinese Mythology of Chang’e woven into it. The story introduces the two rivaling families of the Yee’s and the Changs who live completely different lives and yet their two eldest suddenly find themselves entangled in one anothers fates.

I think that while this book did have some flaws with the romance aspect, the overall theme of family was definitely the highlight of the book. The portrayal of disappointment projected onto Hunter and the pressure of perfection thrown at Luna were way too relatable and I feel attacked. Those are like the inescapable sides of a bridge with having Asian parents; either they’re disappointed in you and think you can’t do anything right or they’re shoving all this pressure and expectations for you to be perfect. There is basically no inbetween and that was absolutely portrayed perfectly.

The mythology portion on the other hand, geez where do I even start with this. To put it simply, it’s beautiful, depressing, and extremely confusing. I've heard the story of Chang'e so many times growing up that I didn't really know what to expect when I read this (except pain) and well, I definitely got what I expected. I did get so lost in the end when the mythology portion popped up so suddenly that I had to reread the couple parts and even then, the words did not compute in my dumb brain. The way mythology was woven (once you actually get it) is literally the most depressing thing in the world at that moment. I’d say that despite the mythology not making the most sense, it doesn’t stray far from the original story and introduces a whole new world of magic that most people didn’t pay much attention to.

And that’s the end of my depressing review! I am so sorry because I haven’t written a blog post in like basically 5 months mostly due to me forgetting this blog existed (sorry 姐姐) and school throwing state testing and finals our way on the last couple months of school. I promise to try to write more and update on my latest books and kdramas because oh boy, there’s a lot more and this review is extremely overdue. In all seriousness though, this book was definitely worth picking up and I would absolutely recommend it. Just a warning though? Might want to bring tissues, at least mentally.

FINAL RATING:

What's your favorite childhood mythology?

"WE ALL HAVE TO DREAM OUR OWN DREAMS. WE ONLY GET ONE LIFE TO LIVE—LIVE IT FOR YOURSELF, NOT ANYONE ELSE."

A half-Japanese teen grapples with social anxiety and her narcissist mother in the wake of a crushing rejection from art school in this debut novel.
Kiko Himura has always had a hard time saying exactly what she’s thinking. With a mother who makes her feel unremarkable and a half-Japanese heritage she doesn’t quite understand, Kiko prefers to keep her head down, certain that once she makes it into her dream art school, Prism, her real life will begin.
But then Kiko doesn’t get into Prism, at the same time her abusive uncle moves back in with her family. So when she receives an invitation from her childhood friend to leave her small town and tour art schools on the west coast, Kiko jumps at the opportunity in spite of the anxieties and fears that attempt to hold her back. And now that she is finally free to be her own person outside the constricting walls of her home life, Kiko learns life-changing truths about herself, her past, and how to be brave.

And yet another contemporary novel that made me have the feels, but not the lovey dovey kind. This was another book on my sister’s bookshelf, and being on the top shelf means that it was a book she really enjoyed. So being an an annoyed and bored potato because I had gotten nagged by my mother previously and didn’t want to go to sleep, I grabbed it and blew through it in about 4 hours. It ended up being the most emotional and relatable 4 hours of my life and while I didn’t really cry while reading this book (shocker I know), I did mentally want to wallow in a ball of sadness. I have acquired my orange slices now so I will now shut up and start the review.

Starfish centers around Kiko, a biracial teenage girl who wants nothing more than to get into an art school and leave the hell she calls home. After reuniting with her childhood best friend, Kiko’s given a chance to escape. And she takes it in a heartbeat. What follows is an incredible journey of a girl who learns to accept her heritage for who she is and gather up courage to speak what’s on her mind. Starfish is a book about family, identity, and finding hope in a world that often makes it difficult to even smile at times.

Sooo this book hit way too close to home and I feel attacked. Kiko’s relationship with her mother and brothers made me want to go give my parents and older sister a hug because I don’t think I realized how privilege I was, nor how toxic family relationships can be. Seriously, the levels of toxicity made me want to jump into the book just so I can wave red flags in Kiko’s face or tell her to get the heck out of there and away from her mom. Reading about Kiko’s sort of growing up story as many Disney and Pixar movies are now telling, was incredibly heartfelt and full of emotion I’m almost certain this book was written coming from personal experience.

I loved watching Kiko grow out of her comfort zone and learn to stand up against her mother’s verbal abuse in which she was unable to do so for years on end. Her seeking to please her mother in hopes of finding any sort of acknowledgment and love was absolutely devastating to read and I know that if I was in her place even a few years ago, I would’ve done the same. Kiko’s pining for her mother’s love all these years annoyed me so much because it was obviously unhealthy but it also set up the expectation that the people closest to you couldn’t possibly hurt you. Also, I’m 99% certain that her mother made her feel worthless because she was insecure about herself which is a load of bs and she needs to get her butt to therapy.

In the end, picking up this book was definitely worth it. There were some aspects of the book that I was slightly uncomfortable with such as the fact that this book basically excused Kiko’s mother’s behavior with having a mental disorder and demonizing certain mental disorders. Nevertheless, the writing told the story beautifully and quite literally paints inspiration into your head. I hope that if you do end up reading this book, you’ll enjoy and love it as much as I did.

FINAL RATING:
What was the story you needed most growing up?
